ADRRN member Masyarakat Penanggulangan Bencana Indonesia (MPBI), through its role as Secretariat of the Indonesian Humanitarian Coordination Platform (IHCP), is supporting humanitarian coordination and information sharing following the powerful earthquake and tsunami that struck Flores and surrounding areas on 15 August 2026.
The 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Flores Sea at 5:58 a.m. WITA, approximately 30 km northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo, at a depth of 15 km. The earthquake generated a tsunami, with sea-level changes recorded at 10 monitoring locations. The highest reported measurement was 0.94 metres in Maurole, Ende.
The BMKG tsunami warning was lifted at 8:31 a.m. WITA across Indonesia. However, communities remain at risk from aftershocks, damaged structures, landslides and rockfalls, and disruption to essential infrastructure and services.
Initial reports indicate damage to homes and public buildings, including the Pelni passenger terminal in Maumere, while reports of rockfalls and landslides are also being verified. At the time of the IHCP Flash Update, consolidated figures on casualties, displacement and structural damage were not yet available.
Through the IHCP coordination mechanism, MPBI is supporting the verification and sharing of information on casualties, displacement, structural damage, access constraints and disruptions to essential services. Key priorities include assessing structural safety, supporting the safe return of evacuated communities, identifying temporary shelter needs, maintaining access to essential services, and ensuring the protection and accessibility needs of vulnerable groups.
MPBI and humanitarian partners continue to encourage communities to follow guidance from BMKG, BPBD and local authorities, remain alert to aftershocks, avoid damaged structures, and report injuries, damage and service disruptions to the relevant authorities.
