STARS Afghanistan – Personal Hygiene Management for IDPs, Returnees and Host Communities Especially Women in the Informal Settlements of Kabul, Afghanistan

Personal hygiene is a concept that is commonly used in medical and public health practices. It is also widely practiced at the individual level and at home. It involves awareness and maintaining the cleanliness of one’s body and clothes. In this regard, personal hygiene is defined as a condition promoting sanitary practices to the self. Generally, the practice of personal hygiene is employed to prevent or minimize the incidence and spread of communicable diseases.

In this regard, Skills Training and Rehabilitation Society (STARS) in collaboration with Johanitor and other partners, is implementing personal hygiene management for IDPs, returnees and host communities especially women in the 3 informal settlements of Kabul in Afghanistan. The main component and goal of the project is to train the women and adolescent girls on better menstrual hygiene management, WASH related diseases and sanitary pad making skills in three Kabul informal settlements camps.

Also as part of the project initiation, STARS organized a participatory training on women’s personal hygiene in one of the informal settlements of Kabul (Hewadwal Camp) where IDPs and refugees reside. In the training, the women discussed about menstruation awareness, mapping of menstruation related diseases and proper/safe disposal of sanitary pads as good menstrual hygiene is crucial for the health, education and dignity of girls and women. It was followed by a question answer session where the queries of women and girls were taken up and discussed broadly.

This project is funded by Johanitor and the German Foreign office.
