Every year, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) reminds us that disasters are not inevitable. They are the result of unmitigated risks. The 2025 theme, “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters,” urges governments, donors, and communities to invest in prevention and preparedness before crises strike.
To commemorate this important day, we are hosting a regional webinar on 16th October that brings together policy experts, practitioners, and local actors to discuss how financing resilience can transform risk governance and protect the most vulnerable across Asia and the Pacific.
The webinar is organised by ADRRN with the SIDRRA consortium partners — International Rescue Committee and Duryog Nivaran — and implementation partners including Philippine Business for Social Progress, MERCY Malaysia, CWS Japan, and Janathakshan.

Who should attend: Policymakers, humanitarian and development professionals, financing institutions, private sector partners, and civil society leaders working to advance disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.
This webinar will unpack the widening gap between growing disaster risks and the financing needed to manage them. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of why traditional aid alone cannot sustain resilience and how alternative, inclusive financing models — from social protection systems to local private sector engagement — can bridge this gap. Discussions will highlight how civil society organisations can partner with governments to strengthen national and local planning, ensuring that funds reach those who need them most. The session also aims to inspire reflection on how every investment, whether public or private, can be made risk-informed and resilience-focused.
The conversation will open with reflections on the IDDRR theme and the importance of shifting global and regional mindsets from reactive aid to proactive resilience-building. Speakers will share real-world examples of how investments in disaster preparedness and local innovation have reduced vulnerabilities and strengthened community capacities. The panel will explore diverse financing pathways, from government-led mechanisms and social protection schemes to gender-responsive and inclusive financial systems. It will also examine how the private sector and civil society can work together to make resilience a shared priority. The session will conclude with insights from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) on the way forward for financing resilience in the Asia-Pacific region.
