Nepal is responding to a major flood emergency following a massive landslide and avalanche in the upper Tibet catchment area of the Lhende Khola on 26 August 2026. The resulting outburst flood affected communities across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan districts.
ADRRN stands in solidarity with the people and communities affected by the Bhotekoshi flood emergency and with all those responding to the crisis. We extend our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones and hope for the safe recovery of those still missing.
Situation Update – 29 August, 2026
Response and recovery operations continue following the devastating flash flood. The latest update indicates extensive damage across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and downstream districts, affecting settlements, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, markets and essential services. Search and rescue operations continue alongside efforts to restore access, communications, health services and other critical infrastructure. The risk of secondary hazards, including landslide-dammed lake outburst floods, remains a key concern, with satellite monitoring being used to support early warning and risk assessment.
The situation remains fluid, and casualty and damage figures are provisional as authorities continue to reconcile information from different sources. The Government of Nepal has mobilised national response agencies, declared affected local levels disaster crisis areas for three months, and made NPR 92.5 million available to 15 local governments for search, rescue and relief.

Situation Update – 28 August, 2026
Response efforts are being coordinated by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), alongside government agencies, security forces, health services and other responders. Search and recovery operations, relief distribution and the restoration of critical infrastructure are ongoing.
Key updates
- 359 people have died, with bodies recovered across eight districts.
- 977 people remain missing or out of contact, including foreign and Nepalese tourists, local residents and security personnel.
- 130 injured survivors have received hospital treatment, with 67 still hospitalised.
- More than 13,000 security personnel and 15 helicopters are involved in search, rescue, evacuation and response operations.
- 35 motorable bridges, 45 suspension bridges and more than 40 km of paved roads have been reported damaged.
- A temporary natural dam has formed upstream of Rasuwagadhi, creating the risk of a further outburst flood. Communities along downstream river corridors remain on high alert.
Immediate humanitarian needs include temporary shelter, blankets and sleeping bags, kitchen sets, hygiene and dignity supplies, solar lighting, food and other essential relief items.
