Sri Lanka: Extreme weather, Flooding, and Landslides Followed by Cyclone Ditwah

  • December 3, 2025

ADRRN Members Responding to the Recent Disaster Events in Sri Lanka

(as on 2nd December 2025)

Situation Overview

Sri Lanka is facing a severe national emergency as heavy rains, widespread flooding, and landslides have caused massive destruction across multiple districts. Communities have been uprooted as homes and essential infrastructure have been damaged or wiped away. As of 2nd December 2025, more than 1,466,615 persons from 407,594 families across 20 districts have been severely affected since the onset of these adverse conditions on 16th November 2025.

Road networks have also been severely affected, with over 75 major routes damaged or inaccessible, hampering rescue missions and the delivery of essential goods. Authorities have issued the highest-level landslide warnings in several districts, indicating that the danger is ongoing. While the military and security forces are actively supporting rescue and relief operations, resources are stretched thin. In addition to government shelters, several civil society organisations have also arranged temporary relief centres, though their contributions are not fully accounted for in official records.

Impacts on the Ground

The scale of this disaster continues to grow with each passing day. As reported by the Disaster Management Centre on 2nd December 2025, over 410 people have tragically lost their lives, while 336 others remain unaccounted for. Since the severe weather began on 16 November, over 1,466,615 individuals from 407,594 families across 20 districts have been affected. Many families have seen their homes destroyed by violent floods or buried beneath landslides, leaving behind unimaginable loss and heartbreak.
