The international Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA) organized a Management Workshop under the Building Safer Organizations (BSO) project from the 19th to the 21st March 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Aim
The aim of the workshop was to demonstrate how to manage investigations into allegations of staff misconduct, particularly on sexual abuse and exploitation, and to promote best practices within organizations.
Objectives:
To increase understanding of
- the context within which abuse and exploitation can occur
- .the model complaints and investigation procedures
- the implications for organizations of having codes of conduct for staff
- the benefits of implementing standardized investigation procedures across organizations
- Organizational responsibility
To establish skills in:
- Implementing the SG’s Bulletin and the IASC Protocol
- Planning and managing investigations
- Keeping all parties safe
- Developing and implementing prevention strategies
Modules, case studies and quizzes were handed over to the participants to work in groups and come up with their opinions. Each group interacted and debated over the answers provided by them.
Three teams were also formed to evaluate the facilitators. Each team had to assess the days work, collect opinions from the participants and comment on the content, methodology, presentation and timings of the workshop. The facilitators would try and include participants’ comments into their next day’s work.
Participants were all asked as to what we wanted out of this workshop. We were all asked to write on a huge flip chart and within no time the whole flip chart was filled with each ones requests and thoughts.
SEEDS’ stance was that we would need continuous training to take it forward and integrate the same into our organization, resources like the funds, manpower and space and that we would also share it with our partners.
