Muslim Foundation for Culture and Development (MFCD) entered into a Partnership agreement with Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) on 11th September 2007 on carrying out IRW-funded activities in Sri Lanka. Dr. M.G. Saiful Islam General Secretary of MFCD and Haroun Atallah, Chief Executive Officer of Islamic Relief Worldwide signed the Partnership Agreement.
Islamic Relief Worldwide is an International Non-Governmental Humanitarian Organization (INGO) established in Birmingham, UK in 1984. It seeks to promote sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities through relief and development programmes. Within a few days of the tsunami in 2004, it started its operation in Sri Lanka by setting up an office and has been engaged in a number of post-disaster and recovery programs such as Permanent Shelters, Livelihood Projects, Orphans’ Care, seasonal feeding program etc. The three villages it created (named as 'IR Villages') with permanent houses for victims of the tsunami, was one of its largest projects which immensely helped the affected in rebuilding their lives. The financial assistance it has been providing to hundreds of orphaned children of Muslim, Tamil and Sinhala communities is indeed commendable. On the successful completion of its targeted projects IRW terminates it office but continues its great service to the people of Sri Lanka through MFCD. As per the Partnership Agreement signed, MFCD will carry out all the above IRW-funded programs in Sri Lanka.
MFCD, a member of the Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN), is operating island-wide with the strong volunteer network and through three regional offices and many field offices. MFCD has wide experience in working closely with government departments, local and international agencies and community leaders. MFCD's rapid response to the tsunami devastation and mass displacement of IDPs of Mutur have proven their commitment and ability to undertake any projects under difficult circumstances. |
